This year, Poway High School will be honoring the local military service men, women and their families as a way of saying “Thank you for all that you do” by hosting three events during their 2005 Football season.
Poway High School’s Football program instills similar core values as the military such as; Honor in Deed, Pride in Team and Commitment to Effort.
The tribute will be on October 14th when Poway High School will have drop boxes placed at all entrance gates for donated items to benefit the Operation Homefront program. Operation Homefront is a national charity that distributes needed food and supplies to the local military families of deployed soldiers.
Suggested items for donation are: Non-Perishable Food, Diapers, Baby Wipes, Baby Formula, Food or Retail Store Gift Certificates and Phone Cards.

Project Wildlife rescues, rehabilitates and releases thousands of wild birds and mammals throughout San Diego County every year. Project Wildlife has a Wildlife Care Center located close to Interstate 8 and Interstate 5 that is open seven days a week to receive wildlife in need. Not only do we need volunteers to work a 4-hour shift per week at our Care Center, but we need people to work with injured and orphaned animals in their homes. Students in a graduate business planning class at San Diego State University (SDSU) have put together a plan to turn $25,000 in seed money donated by their professor into $1 million in order to assist small business owners affected by Hurricane Katrina. Dubbed the Katrina Aid & Relief Effort (KARE), the fund will provide grants for expenses not covered by insurance to expedite the process of getting as many businesses as possible operating again. Through KARE the students are committed to restoring dignity and self-reliance by providing humanitarian aid, hope and renewal for the small businesses of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
All funds raised will support the Small Business Disaster Relief Fund which was s et up by the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI) with the assistance of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation (BRAF). Recipients of the grants will be determined by an objective panel that is already receiving 100-150 applications from businesses per day.
KARE was conceived during the first class meeting of Professor Michael Cunningham’s business planning course. Cunningham challenged his class to come up with ideas on how the business students could use their talents and resources in way in which could aid those affected by Katrina. Cunningham backed up the challenge with a $25,000 grant to be used as seed money on the condition that the class comes up with a viable plan to turn that $25,000 into $1,000,000 by year’s end.
The students plan on achieving their goal by reaching out to San Diego’s business community and SDSU’s College of Business Administration alumni, students, staff and faculty. “It is our belief that we will add value over many of the current relief initiatives by applying entrepreneurial management processes in this effort,” said MBA Student Estella Hadjis. “We are confident we can do more with less and really make a difference in lots of people’s lives.” Students are planning a BMW giveaway , Mardi Gras party and various advertising and marketing campaigns to secure donations.
